Absences and Excuses
The Gainesville City Board of Education subscribes to a policy of good attendance and punctuality as essential to academic performance for all students.
It is the policy of the Board to encourage students to attend school regularly and participate in all class activities physically or virtually on a daily basis. In order to foster regular attendance the Board subscribes to a policy which limits the number of days a student can miss in a specific grading period. The Board strongly urges parental support of this policy in addition to compliance with the State Compulsory Attendance law.
The Gainesville City School Systems attendance requirements are as follows:
I. Excused Absences
Written justification for any absence must be submitted by the student.
A. Excused absences include the following:
1. Personal illness
2. Death or illness in the immediate family
3. Religious holidays

5. When mandated by government agency
6. One day to register to vote
7. Pre-arranged absence approved by an administrator
8. Visiting with a U.S. military parent prior to or on leave from overseas deployment (limited to 5 days per school year)
*Students are to be counted present when serving as page for the General Assembly.
B. Students are expected and permitted to make up all work for credit missed due to absences. This shall include all assignments, quizzes, and tests.
Students who are absent will be responsible for submitting assignments and/or taking scheduled tests/quizzes in accordance with school rules.
II. Unexcused Absences:
The definition of an unexcused absence is "absence from school with or without parents' consent for reasons other than those specified within this policy."
