Gainesville Middle School’s Enhancement period has been restructured to promote reading, writing, and vocabulary enrichment EVERYDAY! Each day focuses on a different theme. The first three days are vocabulary and writing focused with the last two days centered on reading.
Monday: New, important, often confused or misused vocabulary words are introduced.
Tuesday: Vocabulary words from Monday’s list will be enhanced through various vocabulary strategies and/or educational games.
Wednesday: The students will engage in a writing prompt using the vocabulary words.
Thursday: This day is set aside for students to have self-selected DEAR time Drop Everything And Read!
Friday: Teachers use this time to read-aloud to the students. The teachers may choose a short story, article, or novel about their subject to read to the class.
We are VERY excited about this new structure that puts so much emphasis on an essential life-altering skill: reading!
Our goal is to give students frequent encounters with new words and provide meaning of those words that goes beyond traditional definitions so that they can use the words in their speaking, writing, and reading today and everyday…
